pH indicates the acidity or alkalinity of the water. It is the most critical parameter because if the pH is off, chlorine simply stops working.
- High pH (> 7.6): Water becomes cloudy, scale appears on walls, and chlorine loses up to 80% of its disinfecting power.
- Low pH (< 7.2): Water becomes corrosive, damaging pumps and ladders, and causes intense stinging in eyes and skin.

Home drip kits or test strips can give you a rough idea, but they often fail to measure other crucial factors like Cyanuric Acid (stabilizer).
